Land Use in the Delaware River Basin Step 1 of 10 - Land Use in the Delaware River Basin and Future Scenarios 10% The Delaware River Basin (DRB) provides ecosystem services that support a wide array of commercial, recreational, and residential uses for more than 15 million people. This survey is part of a collaborative effort to map, model, and monitor land use change in the DRB. Our goal is to identify a guiding vision to promote regional planning in the watershed, so that our civic and business leaders can make decisions which produce lasting benefits for the regional economy and quality of life. Over the past several months, we have been holding workshops throughout the DRB to collect input on drivers of land use change. We are extending that conversation so that citizens, business leaders, conservation professionals, and others can have the opportunity to weigh in. This survey presents results from our DRB2070 workshops. We are asking you to confirm (or refute) our initial findings, and to provide input on future possibilities for the entire watershed. The information provided prior to August 1, 2016 will be used to draft land use scenarios, which we will use to model alternative futures for the Delaware River Basin in 2070. Generating land use scenarios will require input from many individuals so that the storylines can reflect a shared vision and not just one opinion. Before you begin, you can learn more about our project, our DRB2070 Workshops/land use scenarios, or explore the Delaware River Basin through these story maps produced by the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary. Please note: this survey closed on August 1, 2016. While we are still collecting responses, they may not officially influence our future scenarios or modeling work. However, your feedback may be used for other aspects of our research in the DRB. Thank you. Confidentiality StatementData collected from this survey will be analyzed in aggregate. We will not release individual survey responses and will not ask for any sensitive personal information. You can skip any of the questions. Even though strengths and weaknesses were discussed separately, workshop participants agreed that many factors could be considered both a strength and a weakness. For example, “water” is an abundant resource in the region and is a strength, but is also a threat when considered in the context of flood risk or stormwater runoff. Please note: word size indicates the frequency that this term was discussed during the workshop (i.e. the larger the word, the more it was discussed); word color is only for legibility. The image accurately reflects the current strengths and weaknesses of the Delaware River Basin.Strongly disagreeDisagreeNeutralAgreeStrongly agreePlease share any feedback regarding this word cloud of current strengths and weaknesses. Future Development Catalysts in the Delaware River BasinBelow is a list of potential development catalysts that we have identified for the DRB. A development catalyst is something that will stimulate population growth, economic growth, or land development. How influential do you believe each of these catalysts will be in future land development in the DRB (up to 2070)?Not at all influentialSlightly influentialSomewhat influentialVery influentialExtremely influentialI'm not sureNew or expanded transportation infrastructure (e.g. new or upgraded roads, bridges, rail lines, airports)New transportation technology (e.g. self-driving cars, high-speed rail, hover car)CasinosExpanded tourism; Year-round tourismPopulation growth (natural increase, domestic and international immigration, climate refugees)Expansion/improvement of cell service or wireless serviceNew energy infrastructure (e.g. new power lines, gas pipelines)New public services infrastructure (e.g. schools, medical facilities, universities)Development of new energy resources (e.g. solar and wind)Change in real estate taxesCan you provide any specific examples of development catalysts, for example, a new major residential development, a new road or rail line? Are there other development catalysts that you would like to note? Your comments here can range from the general to the specific. Future Land Protection Catalysts in the Delaware River BasinBelow is a list of potential catalysts for future land protection that we have identified for the DRB. A catalyst for land protection is something that will lead to more protected land, such as land preservation programs or incentives to redevelop existing urban land. How influential do you believe each of these catalysts will be in land protection in the DRB (up to 2070)?Not at all influentialSlightly influentialSomewhat influentialVery influentialExtremely influentialI'm not sureNew land acquisitions permanently protect natural landNew regulations or incentives protect water resources, including wetlands and riparian buffersPayment for ecosystem services provides incentives for land protectionLand use planning and management that focus on climate change mitigation, adaptation, or resiliencePolicy or economic incentives for “smart growth” style of development (i.e. denser neighborhoods, reuse of existing urban land)Can you provide any specific examples of catalysts for future land protection, for example, a new park or new regulation to protect land? Are there other protection catalysts (or development deterrents) that you would like to note? Your comments here can range from the general to the specific. Future Land Use ScenariosBelow are some example scenarios that we are considering developing for the DRB. Land use scenarios are stories about how a region may change over time. They begin by describing what and where the region is today and they continue by recognizing the range of plausible choices that communities and stakeholders might make about how land, water, and other resources will be used. Because different stakeholder interests can be competing interests, there is great value in exploring multiple land use scenarios to visualize the range of possible futures and evaluate tradeoffs among them.Which example scenarios do you think are important to consider for the DRB in 2070?Not at all importantSlightly importantNeutralVery importantExtremely importantI'm not sureRecent Trends (land use patterns follow those from 1950-present)Regional Self-Reliance (growing energy demand, soaring food prices, biomass harvesting, supplying from within region, etc.)Opportunistic Growth (rapid economic and population growth, low land-use planning, etc.)Forest as Infrastructure (forested landscape is actively managed and conserved)Cities/ Towns Build Up (instead of out) while natural lands are protectedLand Protection Reduction (what if currently protected lands had not been protected, projected threats, slow reduction or nibbling away of protected areas)Increased Technology/ Infrastructure (increased work from home, self driving cars, improved mass transit, large scale infrastructure projects)National Emergency (high climate change scenario, sea level rise, population influx from drought areas, increased water diversions, nuclear power plant disaster, etc.)Please list other ideas you would like to explore in a scenario.
